Chapter Ten

A Simpler Solution

Time.

Why did there never seem to be enough of it?

I would give my left foot to be able to spend more of the day with my daughter.

My actions were foolish and I wished so very much that I could make it up to her.

Perhaps we could go for a little ride this morning after–

"Apologies for the interruption, Your Majesty." Lady Marie bowed low.

Try as I might, I couldn’t fight the urge such an action gave me. I felt like a peacock strutting and preened a little. Sitting up straighter and giving more of my attention to those who showed me such reverence.

I gave the woman a nod when she glanced up at me. A silent approval for her to stand and speak her peace.

"Her Highness does need to be getting ready for the day, Sir. The Laurent royal family should be arriving at any moment now."

Fuck!

I forgot about those pompous twats joining their idiotic son with us here at the castle.

Breakfast was my favorite meal of the day under normal circumstances. It was a shame that today's would be absolutely terrible.

"Yes, of course," I said to no one in particular, standing and making my way to the door. Before Zachariah could open the door for us, I turned back to my daughter. "Please remember my words, sweet daughter. I love you."

She rushed to me and wrapped her dainty arms around me as hard as she could. "I love you, too, Daddy."

Blasted allergies. My eyes must have been dried out, what with all the tearing-up nonsense.

I would have to make a point to stop by and grab an allergy tonic.

Scowling to myself, I realized I should probably snag Calli's lady elixir.

So fucking foolish of me.

Calli released me and turned back to Lady Marie, so I too turned and made my way out the door that Zachariah opened.

Turning left, I headed straight toward our royal physicians' quarters. I fully intended to remedy my faux pas at once.

Zachariah quickly caught up to me.

"Well, I was already working my way through excuses I could provide to our guests after your daughter gave you a black eye."

I snorted at the thought, but to be honest… "Yes, I was prepared for the swing. Sadly, my daughter fights dirty and hits with the low blow instead."

Zachariah made a sound in his throat that I deciphered easily, but he proceeded to add a twist to the metaphorical knife. "Well, you did kind of open that door with your–"

I snapped my head in his direction and he smirked. Choosing his words carefully as he continued. "I was going to say, your lovingly misguided decision."

Yeah, he was right. I knew he was, but that didn’t stop me from grumbling in response.

I was completely out of line. I fully understood her anger with me. Hell, I was angry with myself after I gave the order.

At least the outcome was a heart-to-heart with my daughter, and I just couldn’t find it in me to be mad about that.

However, I was very unhappy with the arrival of our guests.
